Arusha Stakeholders for 2015 General Elections Urge Media to Cover More Women Politicians

Arusha Stakeholders of 2015 General Elections have urged media to increase their reporting of women aspirants/candidates in the future elections. The stakeholders attending workshop to disseminate media analysis report of  2015 General Elections produced by TAMWA under the support of UN Women said that most media outlets failed to report enough stories on women aspirants/candidates  because they were more business oriented, hence their coverage focused on what would sale most.

The stakeholders also pointed out that some journalists demanded financial payment and other forms of favour from some of women aspirants/candidates to get their stories reported something which most women aspirants/candidates were not willing to give. In another observation they said that most women aspirants/candidates did not get enough media coverage because they lacked enough media engagement skills.

They suggested that to address the challenges of women aspirants/candidates less media coverage in the future, trainings should be conducted to Tanzania Editors Forums (TEF), Tanzania Press Clubs’ representatives from each region (both male and female), Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority, media owners and Media Council of Tanzania to support women aspirants/candidates in the future elections. They also suggested continuing with joint seminars/dialogues between the media and politicians to create platforms for networking and building better relations.

The workshop held on 23rd December 2016 which brought 28 participants (17 female, 11 male) was attended by journalists, editors, bloggers, former candidates and elected leaders
